Willowood Farm Seed Garlic
Hardneck Garlic aka Ophio Scordoscon

Hardneck garlic is considered the "connosiours garlic."  Simply put, hardneck garlic is called "hardneck" garlic because they make a seed stalk (scape) that leaves a hard "stem" in the middle of the garlic.  Hardnecks are not the type to braid - that darn neck makes it difficult!
But what they lack in braiding abilities they make up for in taste.  The hardneck types comprise of the most complex, the most aromatic, the richest and most flavorful.  They typically have not numerous (between 6 and 12), large cloves that are easy to peel.  They do not store as long as softneck garlic although some hardneck varieties store longer than others.  Typically expect at least 6 months good storage viability on most hardneck varieties.

Georgian Fire, Pretty in Pink...

Porcelain types are the newest "in vogue" garlic varieties.  We must admit, they are one of our favorites to grow on the farm.  They feature routinely large, satiny white elongated bulbs with pinkish clove wrappers that are ever so pretty.  Cloves are BIG and not numerous, usually 5-8 per bulb. They are extremely vigourous in our PacNW climate, producing LARGE plants.  Flavorwise?  These girls produce amazing roasting varieties, with rich true garlicky flavor and an amazing butter-like texture.  A garlic to write home about...

*** Georgian Fire.
Our favorite roaster.
Big, vigorous. Mid season maturity.  Hot raw.

**** Vostani.  Very rare variety from immigrants to British Columbia.  The earliest Porcelain we grow with short, stout plants.  Mild and creamy baked.

****Romanian Red.  SOLD OUT FOR 09!
New to our selection.  VERY HOT RAW!  Lovely, elongated bulbs.

****Music. A standard favorite.  Very vigorous and reliable with excellent flavor.

The Motley Crew of  Purple Stripes

The Purple Stripes, rocking out...

Purple stripe garlics are further divided into three categories - standard purple stripes, marbled purple stripes and glazed purple stripes.  We offer some of all!

     Standard Purple Stripes.
Typically 8-12 cloves per bulb.  Medium size cloves with tight wrappers makes for good storage.

***Chesnok
Red.
Crisp, clean flavor.  Excellent all-purpose.  Reliably vigorous, late maturing, decent storage.  From Republic of Georgia.

***Persian Star.
Delicate, pink striped lovely bulbs.  Excellent all-purpose type, retains its flavor well when cooked.

    Marbled Purple Stripes
This subsect tends to have larger, fewer cloves and big fat bulbs.  Usually deeply purple "marbled" outer clover wrappers.
